Planetary Probe Entry and Descent Instrumentation - a Review
نویسنده
چکیده
Planetary entry probes may carry a variety of ‘simple’ instrumentation to characterize the profiles of basic atmospheric physical properties and composition, in addition to sophisticated chemical analyses and imagers. I survey these ‘simple’ sensors, noting technological improvements in conventional atmospheric structure instruments as well as a number of less well-known instruments such as shock-layer radiometers, acoustic and electric instruments.

Study of Some Planetary Atmospheres Features by Probe Entry and Descent Simulations
Characterization of planetary atmospheres is analyzed by its effects in the entry and descent trajectories of probes. Emphasis is on the most important variables that characterize atmospheres e.g. density profile with altitude. Probe trajectories are numerically determined with ENTRAP, a developing multi-purpose computational tool for entry and descent trajectory simulations capable of taking i...
متن کاملShock protection of penetrator-based instrumentation via a sublimation approach
It is often necessary for space-borne instrumentation to cope with substantial levels of shock acceleration both in the initial launch phase, as well as during entry, descent and landing in the case of planetary exploration. Current plans for a new generation of penetratorbased space missions will subject the associated on-board instrumentation to far greater levels of shock, and ways must ther...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Planetary Entry Systems Synthesis Tool for Conceptual Design and Analysis
A Planetary Entry Systems Synthesis Tool, with applications to conceptual design and modeling of entry systems has been developed. This tool is applicable to exploration missions that employ entry, descent and landing or aerocapture. An integrated framework brings together relevant disciplinary analyses and enables rapid design and analysis of the atmospheric entry mission segment. Tool perform...
متن کاملA Miniature Parachute-probe Dynamics Test-bed
Small-scale sensor packages and parachutes manufactured for model rocket recovery were handdropped from within a building in order to gain familiarity with the descent kinematics of a planetary probe through an atmosphere. A number of parachute-probe systems ranging in size, shape, weight, riser length, and sensors were dropped while exterior video cameras and onboard sensor data were collected...
متن کاملThermal Soak Analysis of Earth Entry Vehicles
The Multi-Mission Earth Entry Vehicle project is developing an integrated tool called “Multi Mission System Analysis for Planetary Entry Descent and Landing” that will provide key technology solutions including mass sizing, aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, and thermal and structural analysis for any given sample return mission. Thermal soak analysis and temperature predictions of various compo...
